Puerto Peñasco’s Galeria de Arte Municipal (GAM) appears to have had better days. We haven’t actually seen it open, so it might be like many other failed enterprises here. It is a shame because there is something of an artistic community here, though clearly not prospering. The sorry state of GAM, reflected in its dilapidated facade, serves as a metaphor for the state of the arts in many jurisdictions. It also serves as a metaphor for the fragile, surreal, and corrupted economy of the world, let alone Puerto Peñasco and Mexico. Although high rise condos line the beach, the town is more like GAM’s exterior. The images of GAM here are an attempt at abstract expressionism to convey a feeling of lost opportunities and faded dreams.
